BEHAVIOUR CHANGE PROGRAMS
Actionable Behavioural Change (ABC Program)
KIO's ABC Program has been designed based on “nudge based theory” to support clients in making changes to habits, or behaviours of concern that may be holding them back.
All individuals have habits or behaviours that could be holding them back from achieving their goals. These can generally be categorised as barriers to participation or engagement. Some clients may also be reluctant to engage with government funded service providers (including Job Active agencies) for numerous reasons. As such our services look to fill this gap by providing a non threatening and supportive environment, removing barriers to engagement.
In an employment services context for example, behaviours of concern that may be specifically targeted by the ABC Program include:
• Failure to regularly engage in job seeking activities
• Failure to meet the requirements of their job search plan
• Poor sleeping habits
• Avoidance behaviour
• Poor telephone technique
• Social isolation
To combat and support clients in changing these behaviours the ABC Program engages both clients and service providers throughout a 3-stage process.
The key point of difference between this program and others relates to our focus on supporting service providers as a key cog in the change process. We support service providers to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to facilitate the habit change process of their clients.
STAGE 1 - Service Provider Training
We train the service providers key staff (Community workers, counsellors, case managers etc) in the basics of the ABC program. In particular we focus on:
- Theoretical aspects of change and habit creation
- How to support the client in identification of the key habits or behaviours they would like to change
- Creation of habits
- Induction to the ABC platform
- Engagement strategies to help support the client
STAGE 2 – The ABC Platform
Clients are introduced to the ABC Platform and undertake the following key steps:
- Selection of habit or behaviour they wish to change
- Creation of a new habit or behaviour to replace the existing one
- Setting daily reminders/nudge’s from the ABC Platform
- Introduction to reporting daily engagement with new habits
STAGE 3 - Monitoring and Review
We provide insight and updates at intervals chosen by the client regarding each individual clients progress. This information is presented in the form of update reports and can be utilised to target individuals who are at risk of not engaging in the behaviour change process.
